Kevin Rudd - Australia's Duke of Plaza Toro

With disaster after disaster befalling the Rudd Government Laurie Oakes says that Rudd has chosen a cowardly way to lead using the word "gutless" to describe his actions in leaving his junior ministers to face the music- it brings to mind the Gilbert and Sullivan character , the craven Duke of Plaza Toro!
In enterprise of martial kind,
When there was any fighting,
He led his regiment from behind
(He found it less exciting).
But when away his regiment ran,
His place was at the fore, O-
That celebrated,
The Duke of Plaza-Toro!
In the first and foremost flight, ha, ha!
You always found that knight, ha, ha!
That celebrated,
The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

ONE of the defining moments of the 2004 election campaign came when Mark Latham ducked out the back door of a building in Hobart to avoid facing angry Tasmanian

Kevin Rudd did not resort to sneaking out of rear entrances when he went to Hobart on Thursday, but he was dodging an unpleasant duty just the same.
The Prime Minister had left junior climate change minister Greg Combet behind in Canberra to face the music alone over the scrapping of the botched home insulation scheme.
Poor sad-faced Combet, whose only role with the scheme has been to try to clean up the mess others made, was given a torrid time by the Parliamentary press gallery.
Down in Tassie, Rudd simply walked away when journalists tried to ask questions on the issue. It was not an edifying sight.
Rudd could not have done more to consolidate a growing reputation for announcing good news and passing the buck when things go bad.
Tony Abbott questions whether the Health system should be run by such incompetents.
But even without the PM's involvement, the insulation scheme announcement diverted attention away from health and back on to other areas much less electorally comfortable for the Government.
It also gave new weight to the most effective of the arguments Abbott has been using to undermine the PM's credibility on health reform - how can a Government that bungles something as simple as putting pink batts in roofs be trusted with fixing a complex health system?

I guess for those not into Gilbert and Sullivan a verse from Lil Abner would also be very appropriate!
"The Treasury says the national debt is climbing to the sky
And govermnent expenditures have never been so high.
It makes a feller get a gleam of pride within his eye,
to see how our economy expands,
The country's in the very best of hands.
The country's in the very best of hands,
The best of hands, the best of hands"

Barnaby Joyce would definitely sing along with that one!

  1. How in the hell did we end up with a South Park character as PM?

  2. Hello, lostinthepost, I thought I recognised the face.... Rudd is a hell of a joke, though, isn't he?

  3. Once again, Laurie has revealed himself as one capable of rational analysis and expressive prose. I don't always agree with what he says, especially when he finds it difficult to contain his left wing journalistic tendencies.

But as on this occasion, he sometimes surprises me and I suspect this is usually when he senses the wind of change and chooses to take the moral high ground in the hope that he will be seen as an accurate prophet of events to come.

Is he sounding the death knell on Rudd's leadership?

I sincerely hope so... it can't come soon enough for me!

  4. The the death knell of Rudd or the end of Labor?
Who would be next? Obviously Gillard bringing a big and disastrous swing to the left. Could that happen prior to the general election, I think not but one does not exactly know how Labor factions think and move.
What we do need to happen is for Rudd to loose the Labor leadership because Australian's have had enough of his lies, mismanagement and massive wasted spending.
