Nuclear Dilemma for Labor!

The Gillard government has painted itself into a corner over future energy sources by insisting on low carbon emissions. Unfortunately the only practical base load generation economically justifiable is nuclear which goes against decades of Labor's strong anti-nuclear stance.

JULIA Gillard faces a right-wing push for the ALP to overturn its entrenched opposition to nuclear power. Some party leaders have declared that Labor must embrace change at next year's national conference despite the Prime Minister's resistance. The issue will be discussed at the conference at the end of 2011 along with same-sex marriage, which has opened up a debate about the party's future direction amid claims it is pandering to the Greens. Ms Gillard must now contend with Labor backbenchers who argue that embracing nuclear power as an alternative energy source is more important than fringe issues such as gay marriage.
Gillard is talking nonsense when she says nuclear power does not "stack up" against renewable energy which is unreliable and very expensive. The issue is another threatening to split the left and right wings of the Labor party and will no doubt be exploited by Tony Abbott waiting in the wings.

  1. It may be that Iran leaders have concluded that the development of nuclear weapons is the only way to rectify the ability of the United States and the apparent willingness to intervene militarily in the region at will, while necessary.

  2. I'm sorry - I don't see the relevance to nuclear power in Australia.
